Another lovely piece written by my talented partner Mike Oates
Now my journey has nearly concluded, and my burden I will lay down
Many miles I have been rambling, and have been welcomed in every town
I’ve been known to keep good company, and the ladies I did charm
And I’m grateful to my creator who’s been shielding me from harm
Oh, the strings of my old companion have long echoed twixt the walls
Of the parlours and ale houses, mud brick hovels and great halls
I’ve played planxties, airs and lullabies; lifting heart and soothing mind
And the legacy of my creations now, to you all I will leave behind
I’ve partaken of finest whiskey, and likewise of splendid wine
I’ve been paid the finest complements, and with gentry I did dine
I’ve serenaded many multitudes, with many friends this island o’er
But a blight now has come upon my health, I will serenade no more
Were I meek perhaps I would compromise; this old minstrel without sight
Some folk would pity poor O’Carolan, but lament not ye my plight
I’ve exploited gifts I inherited, and I shared them with great joy
Had I made the world a mite happier, then ‘tis time to bid you goodbye
Now my spirit seems to be foundering and this feeble frame is tired
I’m no longer the youthful troubadour; so revered and so admired
So, farewell to dearest comrades all; may good fortune reach each hand
Good health and much prosperity to all troubadours of this fair land
